Josh Richardson opts to remain with Heat; Heat extend offers to Cole Swider, Alondes Williams

MIAMI – The Miami Heat roster continues to evolve ahead of Sunday’s 6 p.m. start of NBA free agency, with guard Josh Richardson on Friday opting into the second and final season on the contract he signed last summer. In addition, the Heat on Friday extended qualifying offers for two-way contracts to forward Cole Swider and Alondes Williams, while bypassing a qualifying offer to forward Jamal Cain, the team’s other two-way player from last season, making him an unrestricted free agent. Sidelined for the year at midseason by a shoulder injury, Richardson, 30, picked up his $3.1 million player option rather than return to free agency, extending his second tour with the team. A 2015 Heat second-round pick out of Tennessee, Richardson was brought in last summer at the veteran minimum in the wake of the Heat losing Gabe Vincent and Max Strus in free agency. His return leaves the Heat with a robust rotation at guard, when also factoring in Tyler Herro, Terry Rozier, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Duncan Robinson and second-round pick Pelle Larsson, as well as possible free-agency returns by Delon Wright and Patty Mills. As for Swider and Williams, Friday’s qualifying offer allows the Heat to match outside offers. Cain was only eligible for a qualifying offer at the veteran minimum on a standard contract, which the Heat bypassed. Other impending deadlines for the Heat are the player options held by Caleb Martin, Kevin Love and Thomas Bryant. Related Articles Miami Heat | The next big-big thing?
