Billionaire CEO of military technology supplier Palantir advocates for AI weapons: 'We must not grow complacent'

Alexander Karp, CEO of Palantir, wrote that incorporating AI into defense is key.Scott Olson/Getty Images Alex Karp, the billionaire CEO of Palantir, took to The New York Times to advocate for the development of AI weapons. His comments come after various leaders and tech industry experts have urged caution around AI. Palantir has interest in the matter, as it is a major supplier of technology to the military. In March, a number of tech and business executives — Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, included — signed an open letter calling for a pause on advanced AI development as the launch of OpenAI's GPT-4 sent shockwaves through the industry. The letter came as alarm bells were sounded about everything from AI's capacity to disrupt jobs to more existential fears around AI causing widespread disinformation. But Alex Karp, Palantir's billionaire CEO, says these fears are secondary to the benefits of AI, particularly when it comes to using the technology to protect the United States through military applications. In a recent New York Times op-ed, Karp outlined why he believes we need to continue moving forward with AI development in order to properly integrate the technology with the country's "electrical grids, defense and intelligence networks." "In the absence of understanding, the collective reaction to early encounters with this novel technology has been marked by an uneasy blend of wonder and fear," he wrote.
