A Florida mother has filed a lawsuit against Character.ai and Google after her son took his own life.  Megan Garcia has claimed in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday (Oct 22) that the AI chatbot startup is to blame for the death of her 14-year-old child, Sewell Setzer, after he developed an addiction to the app and a particular attachment to the chatbot it provided.  In an interview with CBS, Garcia said her son was in an ongoing virtual, emotional, and sexual ‘relationship’ with the chatbot named ‘Dany’, after the Daenerys Targaryen character from the smash hit HBO drama series, Game of Thrones. The lawsuit included Google – which recently transferred its Gemini team to DeepMind – as a defendant but the company has clarified that it only had a licensing agreement with Character and did not have any stake in, or control over, the company.  “I didn’t know that he was talking to a very human-like AI chatbot that has the ability to mimic human emotion and human sentiment,” added Garcia. Character.ai previously introduced a new addition to its Voice features where you can talk to them as if on a phone call. If you are lucky enough to possess a Valve Steam Deck you will know that it constantly gets minor updates pushed to it, seemingly at times every time you turn it on. The system is so stable by this stage however that major updates to the machine’s OS are getting fewer and far between. Today’s OS patch – 3.6.19 seems to bring a fair bit with it work talking about though, so let’s have a proper look at what’s new. The video game platform Roblox is rumored to be bringing in a number of changes following criticism about its child-safety policies. According to Bloomberg News, they have reviewed an email that states some of the changes that will be taking place including users under the age of 13 being unable to access certain Roblox chat features unless they have parental permission. This was said to have been written out in an email to parents, along with another change whereby children under nine will need permission to play games with moderate violence or crude humor. To implement these apparent changes, the California-based company is reported to soon be introducing a new type of account where parents can monitor their child’s activity online. The publisher says the company plans to bring in the more stringent protections next month, but a Roblox spokesperson declined to comment about the rumored changes with Bloomberg. Roblox has previously come under scrutiny for child safety It’s in recent times where the company has integrated rules for its users, with the platform being widely played by children globally.

Denmark is considering a wide-ranging crypto tax bill to bring investors into the alternate currency in line with traditional asset holders.  The country’s Tax Law Council has recommended the introduction of legislation to tax unrealized gains and losses on crypto assets held by Danish investors.  The potential new law could commence as early as the beginning of 2026, with a 42% capital gains levy applied.  As part of an extensive 93-page report, the Council set out a recommendation for all crypto holdings to be treated equally, in terms of tax implications. Three new models were outlined: Capital Gains Tax, Inventory tax, and Loss Write-Offs. Inventory Taxation would mean investors are required to pay taxes on their entire portfolio by a set date each year, even if they don’t sell any assets. Capital Gains Tax would introduce a 42% levy on unrealized crypto profits, mirroring Denmark’s approach to traditional assets. Loss Write-Offs would act as an antidote to the tax increases, with investors able to write off losses on gains, in line with ‘regular’ asset investments. The proposal seeks to simplify the tax system and mirrors the approach of Italy which increased its taxes on gains from 26% to 42%.  If the bill is approved, it would mean Danish citizens would be required to pay liabilities on Bitcoin or other crypto assets from the day of purchase, regardless if the holdings have been sold or not. As Apple launches iOS 18.2 in beta, EU users will soon be able to delete the company’s default apps including the App Store and Safari. This comes about following the back-and-forth with the European Commission about compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The EU’s DMA suggests services should not be designated as gatekeepers, with the giants in the industry now having to allow third-party apps or app store providers to access their platforms. To comply with the Act, the iPhone maker has had to agree to a number of changes to the user’s experience.
