Ponderosa repeated as the Class 4A champions on Saturday, and in doing so, made a case that it is currently the state’s premier high school baseball program. “This might upset people, but we would’ve won 5A last year and we would’ve won 5A this year,” Ponderosa coach Bob Maloney said. “I’m not trying to be arrogant, but we were the best team in the state of Colorado the last two years.” The Mustangs run-ruled Cheyenne Mountain 11-1 at UCHealth Park, and outscored their seven playoff opponents 89-21 while averaging over a dozen runs per game in the regional and state tournaments. Ponderosa and Cheyenne Mountain traded runs in the first inning before the Mustangs broke the game open with a seven-run fourth.
