Multiple people have been asked to leave hotels in the past few weeks after living in them for months or years. But a tenants’ rights law firm is arguing that they should be treated the same as conventional tenants, meaning hotels can’t immediately kick them out without going through a formal eviction, which affords the tenant more time to find another place to live. The Maine State Housing Authority announced last week that it would cap hotel reimbursement rates starting June 1 as part of a number of changes the agency is making to try to preserve rent relief funds from two federal COVID relief packages for the neediest tenants until next winter.
