New COP26 Draft Has Surprisingly Ambitious Language on 1.5°C

The deletion of a single word in the latest draft of the climate deal being negotiated at the COP26 climate conference signals a surprisingly ambitious move to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. The previous draft stated that countries recognize that limiting global warming “to 1.5°C by 2100 requires rapid, deep and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions.” The new version omits “2100.” Under the Paris Agreement signed in 2015, countries agreed to keep the temperature increase to “well below’’ 2°C degrees and try to limit it to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels.
