The Habitat Co., a property management firm that oversees about 3,400 units of public housing for the Chicago Housing Authority, has moved to end its management agreements with the agency after almost 40 years of partnership. Correspondence obtained by the Tribune Friday reveals that on Sept. 6, the Habitat Co.’s president, Matthew Fiascone, informed CHA that his firm was denying the authority’s request to extend the company’s property management contracts for the next year.

WASHINGTON — Safety investigators are making “urgent” recommendations to Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration after determining pedals that pilots use to steer 737 Max jetliners on runways can become jammed because moisture can leak into a rudder assembly and freeze. Tinley Park planners have advanced a proposal from a trucking firm to expand its footprint in the village as a way to boost sales of used vehicles. Freightbull Inc., which operates in an area of the village already home to other light-industrial tenants, is looking for a larger space to park semi-trucks and trailers belonging to the business.

Some Homer Glen residents are upset with a proposal by British Petroleum to clear about a mile’s worth of trees, some of which are several hundred years old, to better maintain its pipeline that runs through the village. “Some of these trees have been dated to be over 300 years old,” said resident Joe Turrise, a member of the village’s environment committee.

Flossmoor resident Juanita “Nita” Tribo, 86, who died Sept. 20, is being remembered as a tenacious businesswoman who left a lasting legacy in her community satisfying sweet-tooth cravings for generations of customers at her CarmelCorn Shop in Chicago Heights. Tribo’s family members described her as a phenomenal cook and devoted caregiver who is famous for her hand-written notes often scribbled on various scraps of paper, according to her daughter, Lisa Hallberg. “We’re looking at a note now that says, ‘Take your pills before coffee,'” Hallberg said, referring to a reminder she wrote for her husband, Enzo Tribo, who is now 92. Nita Tribo ran CarmelCorn while her husband operated Enzo’s, an Italian beef establishment that had been serving the community since 1946.
