McHenry County Board member Chuck Wheeler and other Second Amendment rights advocates are trying to collect signatures to put an advisory referendum on the general election ballot to protect gun rights. The proposed referendum would read, “Shall McHenry County stand as a pro-Second Amendment county that protects lawful gun owners from unconstitutional laws passed by the Illinois General Assembly?” “This advisory referendum does not take a position on the issue but rather gives county residents the option to voice their opinion, either pro or con, on the issue,” Wheeler said. Tom Dorsch, director of operations at On Target Range and Tactical Center in Crystal Lake, said Friday that the referendum is trying to make a statement that McHenry County is full of law-abiding gun owners who feel that the state is coming down on those who are lawful and giving a pass to those who are lawless. “We are the ones paying for everything and not committing crimes, and [we are] seen as the problem with anti-gun legislators,” said Dorsch, who also serves as vice chairman of the McHenry County Committee to Protect the Second Amendment. But in an op-ed submitted to the Northwest Herald, Michael Rugh – chairman of the Ridgefield-Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church’s Compassion, Peace and Justice team – said the movement doesn’t represent the majority of residents’ attitudes about gun safety. “Weekly shootings have become commonplace, and the knee-jerk response of ‘thoughts and prayers’ is not enough,” Rugh wrote.
