Tom Kacich | Even just after WWI, Memorial Day wasn't a perfectly patriotic affair

In 1919, the Champaign Daily Gazette (which seven months later would be out of business) already had cause to decry that the day of remembrance was seemingly becoming another day of commercialism. Not unlike the United States of 2019, Americans in 1919 — just months removed from the end of a great world war — were of two minds about Memorial Day.
