Incumbent El Paso County sheriff opens wide lead over Republican challenger

Incumbent El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder appeared headed toward a second four-year term, opening up a commanding lead over challenger, Mike Angley, in early results in Tuesday's Republican primary. With 70,708 of the more than 111,171 ballots counted, Elder led by about 10,000 votes, 57 percent to Angley's 42 percent, according to the county Clerk and Recorder's Office. At a gathering at El Padrino Mexicano restaurant in northeast Colorado Springs, Elder hugged family and supporters when the results were announced.
