Cedar Rapids man sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for possessing stolen firearm

CEDAR RAPIDS — A man previously convicted of distributing and using drugs was sentenced Monday to more than five years in federal prison for illegally possessing a stolen firearm.Derek Hines, 33, of Cedar Rapids, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to possessing a firearm as a prohibited person in June. A plea agreement shows Hines, a convicted felon and user of marijuana and methamphetamine, admitted to having a firearm in January. Cedar Rapids Police Department officers found Hines unconscious in the driver’s seat of a parked car with a loaded 9 mm handgun and drug paraphernalia.The gun had previously been reported stolen by its owner in 2012, according to the plea agreement.
