ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Call it a case of extremely bad timing. Desiring to fulfill his wife’s wish for her birthday, Chief Kevin Martin of the Lima Police Department took his wife, Christy, to St. Thomas for their first vacation this year. Unfortunately, the visit, which began Saturday and is set to end with their return trip Saturday, happened to coincide with the arrival of Hurricane Irma on Wednesday, a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds at 185 miles per hour and gusts of up to 225 miles per hour as of Wednesday afternoon. “We’ve taken shelter at the Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, and they’ve got everything right here on site,” Martin said during a phone call late Wednesday morning.
