Japan’s Princess Mako Gives Up her Royal Status to Marry a Commoner

Princess Mako, the eldest grandchild of Japan’s Emperor Akihito, officially confirmed Sunday that she will give up her royal status and marry for love. The princess formerly announced her engagement to Kei Komuro, a 25-year-old graduate student who is currently working at a law firm, during a press conference in Tokyo, the Japan Times reports. Under Japanese law, female members of the Imperial family must relinquish their royal status if they marry a commoner.
