James Baldwin and the Ugly Moral Problem in America’s Heart

In August 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Over 250,000 people were in attendance and even more watched it on their television sets. Television had transformed the country since its invention in 1946. It quickly changed how Americans experienced family life, how they consumed goods, and how they participated as citizens in the political life of the country. By the time of the March on Washington, 91 percent of Americans sat in front of the television for their nightly news.
