Robbery leaves Fairgate Farm in need of equipment

The thief, who hopped the fence and cut the lock on the supply shed, made off with a lawn mower, weed trimmer and cordless drill — in all, a few hundred dollars worth of equipment. After the theft, grass in the 1-acre garden had risen waist-high, a obstacle for Novajosky and the volunteers who tend to the rows of vegetables off Stillwater Avenue. Founded as a partnership between the city’s housing authority, Stamford Hospital and the Boys & Girls Club, Fairgate Farm has been a presence on the West Side since 2011. New volunteers are always accepted and encouraged to take home produce. New Covenant Center, the Stamford nonprofit that runs a soup kitchen and food bank, was the recipient this week of several bags of fresh-picked kale.
