Two days before Mormon leader Brigham Young and his pioneer entourage descended from the Wasatch Mountains, William Carter was already at work in the refugee sectâs new Salt Lake Valley home. The 26-year-old English convert had crossed the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes by ship, and wore out shoe leather walking from Chicago to Nauvoo, Ill., where he met and married Ellen Benbow.
