Dirty filters top reason A/C fails

“Without a doubt, always and forever, the main reason for an air-conditioning or heating system failing is because of a dirty filter,” asserts Tom Eppers, co-owner, Dowe & Wagner, a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning company (HVAC) serving residential and commercial customers in Illinois and Wisconsin. He explains, “When the air-conditioning or furnace filters aren’t changed periodically, dirt builds up and restricts the system’s airflow, which damages the equipment.  The filter traps impurities before they can circulate through your home.” Eppers recommends the wider four- to six-inch pleated filters, “which have twenty times the surface area to trap debris than thinner one-inch filters.  They cost more, but they remove more air-borne particles and pollutants that can damage the blower motor and other parts.” A less expensive $20 filter that needs to be changed bi-monthly may become more expensive than a higher quality filter that lasts all year. How to tell if your furnace filter is dirty?  “Remove the filter and hold it up to the light.  You can see through a clean filter.  Otherwise, it may be time to change it,” Eppers says. While manufacturers’ instructions vary, many HVAC units benefit from a fresh filter seasonally. Some homes’ programmable thermostats send owners automatic reminders to check and change the air filter.  Another option for remembering is setting a recurring monthly reminder on your smart phone, tablet, or computer.  Writing monthly reminders on a calendar may help, or purchase a supply of filters and label them in advance of when they’ll be changed. Eppers adds that some filters can cost up to $1,000, but they perform additional air purification functions, last more than 10 years, and kill germs, viruses, chemical and other airborne allergens.
