By Emma Crawford Kent Daily Journal TUPELO – A group of new Tupelo Public School District school buses will soon hit the road as part of the district’s ongoing effort to replace old buses with newer and safer vehicles. The 11 buses are the latest additions to TPSD’s fleet. Eight of the buses are 2018 model 77-passenger buses bought at a price of $86,500 each. One of the buses is a 2018 model special education bus, purchased for $91,750. Those nine buses cost $783,750 total. TPSD also will purchase two activity buses, to be used strictly for field trips and athletic team travel, through advertised bid specifications. According to Andy Cantrell, TPSD director of operations, the district is considering installing Wi-Fi on at least two, and possibly four, activity buses. Cantrell said the number of buses that receive Wi-Fi will depend on the price of the two new activity buses. The district discussed adding bus Wi-Fi around this time last year but put the idea on hold until now. “It was discussed but it never came to fruition,” Cantrell said. At the time, TPSD assistant superintendent Eddie Peasant said the Wi-Fi would allow students traveling to and from athletic events and on field trips to do school work en route more easily.
