OUR OPINION: Leaders must collaborate to solve jail issue

More friction involving the proposed construction of a new jail in Lee County arose last week. County leaders served the city of Tupelo on Friday with a two-year notice that they intend to terminate a 22-year old agreement under which the county has housed the city of Tupelo’s prisoners, as reported by Daily Journal local government reporter Caleb Bedillion. And it wasn’t the first discord this year between city and county leaders about the possible jail. Tensions began to simmer when Lee County leaders sought a bill from the Mississippi Legislature to give them the ability to build the facility outside of Tupelo, if they choose to do so.
