By Emma Crawford Kent Daily Journal GUNTOWN – Guntown Middle School teacher Connie Gusmus believes knowledge is power, whether it’s science or first-aid. That is why Gusmus wanted seventh-grade students at the school to receive CPR training, and with it, the power to potentially save lives. On Thursday, Claire Harrelson, nurse and CPR instructor at the North Mississippi Medical Center heartburn center, taught students how to use an AED, how to do CPR and steps to take in the event of a medical emergency. All seventh-graders, about 300 students, participated throughout the day. The training sessions were part of a health care unit seventh-graders have been doing in class. Gusmus even showed them an app that lists locations of AEDs nearby based on the user’s location. Although the students didn’t receive enough training to become CPR certified on Thursday, Gusmus said, they did learn enough to potentially help in an emergency situation. “At least if they’re in the mall or somewhere, they’ll know enough to get started and to get help and find an AED,” Gusmus said.
