Lightning to blame for power outage

Daily Journal TUPELO – Monday evening lightning bears the blame for a power outage early Wednesday morning that knocked out power for Tupelo Water & Light and Tombigbee Power Association customers. The outage began about 4 a.m. and lasted a couple of hours. North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo was among those affected. TWL Director Johnny Timmons explained that on Monday evening, lightning struck a line and damaged what is called a lightning arrester. A lightning arrester absorbs the surge of power from a lightning strike and redirects the current away from the line. The damaged arrester later exploded at approximately 4 a.m.
