Bobcat found dead on roadside

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says between 20 and 30 vehicle-killed bobcats are collected annually and examined for physical condition, age, and breeding condition. Bobcats are about two to three times the size of their distant relative, the domestic house cat, and the tracks of a young bobcat are often confused with those left by a roaming house cat. State Department of Transportation data show about 3,900 vehicles a day use Old Tavern Road and about 9,500 on Orange Center Road. Besides bobcats, Orange police said there are many species of wildlife here in the town including deer, fox, coyote and fisher cat. DEEP says bobcat attacks on people are extremely rare and the cats “are not a significant vector of disease and rarely contract the mid-Atlantic strain of rabies.”
