Stamford police: Son follows father’s path in car repair scam

STAMFORD — A New Haven man, who police say is following in his father’s shady footsteps, has been charged with ripping off three city residents for shoddy auto repairs. Bobby Megel, 28, faces several charges of larceny, illegal sales without a tax receipt and operating a repair shop without a license. Megel’s father Jimmy, 44, also of New Haven, is serving a 10-year prison sentence in part for taking as much as $138,000 from another 88-year-old Stamford man to fix his 1991 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon back in 2013. “Usually, Bobby and his father start with the auto body fraud scam, and anytime they can capitalize on that or see an opportunity to gain access to their victim’s financial accounts, checks or credit cards, they will take full advantage,” DeRiu said.
