Before the gate is released, even before a rider lowers himself atop an animal, dozens of young bull riders and sheep riders mingle in a maze of chutes behind the main gates and platforms, waiting to be paired with their animal for a much-anticipated ride. At the Amarillo National Center this week, this area behind the gates is where 5-year-olds lug their bull ropes and protective hockey masks over their shoulders as they walk to the chutes.
