AUGUSTA – Lawmakers in the Maine House of Representatives have until 5 p.m. today to say whether they want to return to the State House for a special session to address the conduct of Gov. Paul LePage. Recent statements by the Republican governor about the race of drug dealers importing heroin to Maine along with a vulgar message he left on the voicemail of a Democratic state representative prompted House Speaker Mark Eves, D-North Berwick, to poll House membership on a possible special session aimed at sanctioning LePage in some fashion. Maine Senate President Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport, has not issued a similar request to members of the state Senate after talking with Eves and Republican colleagues about what lawmakers could achieve during a special session that would be unprecedented in Maine history. Thibodeau all but ruled out a special session on Friday, saying Senate Republicans were not interested in trying to remove LePage from office. “It is regrettable that Democratic leadership, with their actions, has made the goal of holding the governor accountable much more difficult,” Thibodeau said in a prepared statement Friday.
