Memorial walk for heroin victims in Averill Park

Dozens of residents of this suburban town, hard hit by the heroin epidemic, held a memorial walk and candlelight vigil Wednesday in remembrance of more than a dozen young people from their community who have died from fatal overdoses in the past three years. The display of grief marked a sharp contrast from an initial response of denial and refusal to discuss the loss of young lives to a heroin scourge that has left a wide path of death and wreckage across the region, state and nation. Organizers included Kim and Tim Murdick, whose 22-year-old son, Sean, co-captain of the 2011 Averill Park High School football team, died last year from a heroin overdose after he relapsed while in a treatment program in Florida. Sean did not die in vain," his father said in a Dec.
