Ex-offender joins city's anti-violence initiative

Frederic Green, 39, has turned his life around after serving time in prison in the 1990s for peddling drugs on Savannah’s streets. Now Green is trying to help others in danger of being locked up or killed escape the criminal lifestyle. As the newly hired outreach coordinator for Savannah’s End Gun Violence initiative, Green serves as a liaison between the community members under scrutiny and the social service providers available to help. Green grew up in impoverished and crime ridden communities on Savannah’s westside, where he started dealing narcotics as a young teen, and said many of the same areas where End Gun Violence is focused are still facing the same social ills. “Sometimes an individual becomes a part of what is going on in the environment,” he said. His job entails making sure people who are causing the violence have the support they need to put down their guns by linking them to resources for education, job training and employment. “It’s proven that people do want to change their lives with the right support,” Green said.
