The city of Savannah may use its condemnation powers to acquire property along the eastern edge of the Savannah River Landing development site. The property is needed to widen the Bilbo Canal north of President Street for improved drainage to the Savannah River, but the city has been unable to come to agreeable sales terms with the owners, MMA/PSC Savannah River LLC, according to city officials. On Thursday, the Savannah City Council authorized the taking of the property — amounting to about 40,000 square feet — by seeking an order from Chatham County Superior Court. The city is having an updated appraisal of the property conducted, said City Attorney Brooks Stillwell.
