Roy Harris has withdrawn from the race for Chatham County sheriff. A spokesman for the Harris campaign said no further statement would be released. John Wilcher, who beat Harris in a runoff last week to succeed longtime Sheriff Al St Lawrence, will be sworn in Tuesday. The special election is only good through the end of the year, and, before today, Harris and Wilcher would both have been vying for the Republican candidacy for sheriff in a May 24 primary. Harris had sent an email to department staff on Friday announcing it was his last day in the office. “This is my 45th year in this profession, and I leave wishing you the very best in the future,” Harris said to his staff.
