Savannah officials tout new downtown signs

The project took about 11 years, but the city of Savannah finally has begun installing signs downtown to help guide drivers and pedestrians to their destinations. And after a bit of difficulty removing a stubborn cover, officials on Wednesday unveiled one of the signs on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The green sign with arrows pointing to the Visitor Center and the Savannah History Museum is one of 15 installed in March during the first phase of a plan to install 265. Signs had been installed previously to identify parking garages, visitor centers, shuttle stops and the River Street elevator. The sign program — approved as part of a Visitor Mobility Plan in 2005 — was developed by a group of community volunteers and a team of consultants, said Bridget Lidy, director of Savannah’s Tourism Management and Ambassadorship department. Funding challenges posed by the recession delayed the implementation of the $1.5 million plan, which is meant to guide people to parking garages and increase walking and use of public transportation, Lidy said. “This project has been long in the making,” she said. Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said he and the others involved in the process knew they had a plan that would enhance the city for visitors and residents. “I even think General Oglethorpe would approve,” Marinelli said. To fund the initiative, the city joined forces with Savannah Mobility Management, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve transportation and relieve congestion downtown. About $24,000 in funding from the nonprofit organization, along with about $35,000 in city funds and a $20,000 state grant, has gone toward the initiative so far. During the next year, voter approved sales-tax funds are expected to provide $500,000 to install more, according to city officials.
