Standing in Mother Mathilda Beasley Park on Tuesday morning, Detric Leggett said he wanted to bring a renewed focus on youth to the eyes of the Chatham County commission. Leggett, a surgical worker at Memorial University Medical Center who ran for City Council last year, is challenging District 2 Commissioner James Holmes. “We’re going to be hard on crime, and we’re going to be hard on blight,” Leggett said. Leggett said he wanted to work toward expanding recreational opportunities for kids and young adults — programs he feels could be more prominent in unincorporated Chatham County and in county-owned parks and facilities. He also said he would stand for transparency in government and make sure to work with Savannah City Council to make progress. “I’m here for the communities that are voiceless,” Leggett said.
