Chatham County man indicted in aggravated assault following February Pooler shooting of deputy

A Chatham County resident on Wednesday was indicted on aggravated assault on a peace officer and related charges in the February shooting of Deputy Sheriff Cpl. Lester Ellerbe in Pooler. Vincent Helmy Jr. fired a 30-30 rifle "in the direction" of Ellerbe on Feb. 10 while the deputy was engaged in his official duties, the Chatham County grand jury said in returning a 17-count indictment. Ellerbe was he was shot while serving a stalking warrant in Pooler. Officers from various agencies, including the Georgia State Patrol, Savannah-Chatham police, Pooler police and the U.S.
