The Avs spotted the Buffalo Sabres a four-goal lead, still trailed by three after 40 minutes and then roared back for a 5-4 win Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice, Artturi Lehkonen added the game-winner and Scott Wedgewood made 22 saves in 48 minutes of shutout relief to help the Avs avoid what looked like an ugly start to this season-long five-game road trip. “After the first 12, it was pretty good,” MacKinnon said.

No other top Class 5A football program besides Regis Jesuit and Pine Creek wanted to, or could, face the Bruins in non-conference play. So Cherry Creek was forced to schedule three out-of-state bouts in Utah, Nebraska and Texas in order to ensure the Bruins had enough games. Those road trips molded Cherry Creek for its seventh straight Class 5A title appearance on Saturday, where the Bruins are a heavy favorite against Legend at Canvas Stadium. “We learned a lot about our team (from those games),” Cherry Creek head coach Dave Logan said.

Sanders’ recruiting of the high school ranks has been underrated nationally, though, and on Wednesday – the two-year anniversary of his introductory press conference – the Buffs are set to sign one of the best groups in the Big 12 for the class of 2025.
