GENE PHELPS TUPELO I’m not sure how many high school football games I’ve covered as a sports writer during 37 previous seasons. Has to be in the 300-plus range. You don’t forget those sweltering-hot August and September kickoffs or those bitter-cold November playoff nights. But a crisp, cool fall evening trumps them all, and there have been plenty of those. Hundreds of 16, 17 and 18-year-olds have provided some memorable plays (Hattiesburg scoring on a 78-yard play-action pass against powerful Moss Point on the game’s opening play), the not-so-memorable (Watched a team not field the opening kickoff.
