'Ranch Gates of the Southwest’ opens eyes to lonely vistas

New and notableYou see them from the highways and roads all over the West but don’t really see them. Now, Daniel Olsen, a design professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and Henk van Assen, a New York designer, have put together a salute to these sentries of the open road with Ranch Gates of the Southwest, a hardback, full-color coffee-table collection that chronicles their travels from North Texas through Central and West Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada.
