Ash borer infestation spreads to Dallas County, county number 21

Dallas County has become the state’s 21st county with a confirmed emerald ash borer infestation. The tree-killing pest was positively identified in a residential tree in the southeast corner of rural Dallas County, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced Wednesday.“This finding is the closest to Polk County and Iowa’s capital city to date” said Mike Kintner, the agency’s EAB and gypsy moth coordinator. It is also the third confirmed infestation so far this year, Kintner said. The ash borer kills all ash tree species and is considered to be one of the most destructive tree pests ever seen in North America. After an arborist contacted state officials about a suspect tree, members of the Iowa EAB team found characteristic galleries, recent woodpecker activity and live larvae that were positively identified.A statewide quarantine, issued more than a year ago, remains in place, restricting the movement of hardwood firewood, ash logs, wood chips and ash tree nursery stock out of Iowa into non-quarantined areas of other states.State Entomologist Robin Pruisner urged Iowans not to move firewood long distances.Limiting the movement of firewood, she said, can delay the spread of the pest to parts of the state that have not yet been affected.Ultimately, the pest will spread to all parts of Iowa, killing almost all of the more than 50 million ash trees in the state, officials say.The window for preventive treatment measures — trunk injection, soil injection, soil drench or basal trunk sprays — runs from mid-April to mid-May.
