DENVER — There is little blood but a lot of guts in Helen Thorpe’s new book “Soldier Girls,” about three women in the Indiana National Guard who went to war together and gave a brutally honest account of their service, boredom, affairs, drinking, stress-relieving stunts and long-distance parenting from Afghanistan and Iraq.
