Rumors are true: Big 10 disbands

The rumors had been swirling for over a year regarding would the Big 10 really break up. Monday, the answer was finally provided: Yes. The Big 10 grew out of the remnants of the Diocesan League in 1977. The league membership for the 2013-14 scholastic year included Albany, Amsterdam, Bishop Gibbons, Bishop Maginn, Catholic Central, Christian Brothers Academy, La Salle, Schenectady and Troy. After Amsterdam's second attempt to gain entrance into the Foothills Council was approved in March, the Big 10 certainly knew it was going to find challenges in certain sports — especially on the girls' side with there only being five schools active for varsity sports such as soccer and softball. "That was the biggest challenge.
