Davis said the single best aspect of the meeting Tuesday night between parents of special education students and Region 5 Education Service Center staff was the communication. More than 50 parents of special education students met with moderators from Region 5 on Tuesday night at Caldwood Elementary School to voice their concerns and praise for the BISD special education program. Shafer said the information parents provided the school district was "invaluable," although he asked parents not to discuss their children specifically but to instead have a broad discussion of the special education program. Parents voiced concerns over special education teachers' inadequate training, their lack of involvement in their children's education and the dearth of communication from BISD staff, Hereira said. BISD would then study the report to see how it could improve the special education program and develop a long-term plan, one that would be ready for the new special education director.
