It might surprise the thousands of Bend residents who have moved here in the past decade that until 2003, the Bill Healy Bridge did not exist, and the canyon where hundreds of people walk and run along the river each day was an old log deck left behind when the mills shut down. While few quibble about the attractiveness of the bridge, the extension of Reed Market Road and construction of Farewell Bend Park, the development of that bridge and the surrounding area was not without controversy.
