Hundreds pay tribute to fallen firefighter

Hundreds pay tribute to fallen firefighter Hundreds of firefighters from across the region gathered at Notre Dame Catholic Church Saturday morning to celebrate the life of Russell F. Neary, the Easton firefighter who was killed Monday night during the height of Superstorm Sandy. People stood along the walls of the church and outside in the cold, windy weather to pay their respects to the person, who many remembered as a family guy who loved his dogs, Emerson and Dolly, loved horse racing and being a volunteer firefighter. Neary, 55, a volunteer firefighter and president of the Easton Volunteer Company No.1, died Monday responding to a call during Hurricane Sandy when a tree fell on him. Neary responded to a call for a house fire, which turned out to be a false report, said Casey Meskers, the public information officer and vice president of the volunteer department. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Russell Neary Memorial Trust Fund to benefit Joel Barlow High School's Girls Cross Country & Girls Track and Field Teams and the American Red Cross.
