Austin Gomber was fired up in the seventh. Against the Kansas City Royals, the Rockies starting pitcher desperately needed to get out of a tough spot in order to maintain his team’s two-run advantage. With one out and runners at the corners, Gomber forced Royals second baseman Garrett Hampson to pop out and had center fielder Kyle Isbel fly out before letting out a loud scream and pumping his fist, as he walked towards the dugout. Gomber hasn’t earned a victory since May 15.

Free agency lulled Nuggets fans to sleep, only to jolt them awake at last. Croatian big man Dario Saric and the Nuggets have agreed to a two-year, $10.6 million contract with a player option on the second year, league sources told The Denver Post on Saturday. An eight-year NBA veteran, Saric has played with five teams, most recently averaging 8.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the Golden State Warriors last season. Saric, 30, has also reprised his national team role this summer at Croatia’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Until head coach Sean Payton names a starting quarterback, the three-man race between rookie Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson will be the most talked about position battle during training camp. Throughout organized team activities and mandatory minicamp, each quarterback displayed traits that could make him a candidate to be the starter.

Six games into the second half of their season, we know a lot about the 2024 Rockies. For example, their bullpen has been historically bad, their rotation shows hints of promise, their lineup is bereft of power, they strike out too much and don’t walk often enough, they have three Gold Glove candidates, and they play terribly on the road. And, oh yes, Kris Bryant has played in only 24 of 87 games because of injuries. But what will the rest of the season bring?

While there is still time for a few roster moves, it’s fair to ask: Which team has had the worst offseason? The Nuggets, in a salary cap straight jacket, lost popular 3-and-D guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as a free agent to the Orlando Magic.

This offseason, Kindyll Wetta has learned that she’s no fan of saltwater showers and that she can survive for a few weeks in France without knowing the language. Most importantly, Wetta has reinforced the thought that she’s ready for life after basketball – but only after making the most of her final season with the Colorado Buffaloes. “I’ve always been a big advocate of, like, basketball does not define me and I don’t have goals to play pro after college,” said Wetta, a rising senior for the CU women’s team.
