Colorado state officials are taking a two-track approach to electrifying the state’s transportation: pursuing a mandatory standard for electric vehicles while exploring an alternative, voluntary program proposed by auto manufacturers. The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission voted unanimously Friday to move ahead with plans to hold hearings in August and consider adopting California’s zero-emission vehicle standard. A certain percentage of manufacturers’ vehicles sold in Colorado would have to be electric, likely between 6 percent and 10 percent, starting with the 2023 model year. The next couple of months, the Colorado Energy Office and Department of Transportation will also keep talking to the Auto Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers about going the voluntary route instead.
