Daal, Routt help Daytona Tortugas nip Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-2

The Daytona Tortugas continued their dominance of the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday night, walking away with a 3-2 victory on the road, their eighth win in 11 games against their Florida State League North Division opponents. Four of the wins have come at Auto Exchange Stadium.Shortstop Carlton Daal went 2 for 3 with a walk to raise to his average to .269 for the Tortugas (13-11 second half, 49-45 overall).

 

Daytona Tortugas add ex-Sandcrab Daniel Pigott

Former Seabreeze Sandcrab and University of Florida Gator Daniel Pigott is back home in Daytona Beach.
The 2012 ninth-round draft pick was transferred to the Daytona Tortugas from the Arizona League Reds and reinstated from the disabled list Monday. The Tortugas also released first baseman Robert Ramirez.
Pigott went 1 for 4 as a designated hitter in Monday's 3-2 win at Dunedin.
Pigott, a first baseman, had surgery for a bone spur in his left foot in the spring of 2013. Early last year, a hernia sidelined him for a couple of months.

 

State lawmakers to meet in special session for congressional redistricting

TALLAHASSEE - August will be back-to-Tallahassee time for state lawmakers.Senate President Andy Gardiner and House Speaker Steve Crisafulli sent a joint memo to lawmakers Monday announcing that a court-ordered special session to redraw eight of the state's 27 congressional districts will begin Aug. 10 and run until Aug.

 

Daytona Beach police need help catching ATM thieves

Daytona Beach police need help finding the burglars who stole an ATM machine from a dollar store early Monday.The suspects broke into Dollar General at 715 Mason Ave, Daytona Beach police Sgt. John Creamer said.The suspects used a crowbar to enter a business and then removed the cash machine. Video surveillance recordings showed the burglary suspects using a silver 2000 Dodge Ram pickup stolen from 875 Derbyshire Road just before the burglary, Creamer said.Anyone with information is asked to call at 386-671-5242 or email the detective at runged@dbpd.us.

<span style="font-size: 12px;">The price of gold fell to five-year lows Monday as the dollar remained strong and the Federal Reserve continued to send signals that it plans to raise interest rates soon.The precious metal fell $25.10 to close at $1,106.80, trading at its lowest price since March 2010.

 

Former Volusia councilman running for elections supervisor

Former Volusia County Councilman Andy Kelly is running for Supervisor of Elections.Kelly, 57, is the first person to vie for the elected position being vacated by Ann McFall, who has been in the post for 12 years and has been in elected office a combined 28 years. McFall has said she will retire at the end of her term in 2016.Kelly was the District 1 County Council representative from 2007-2012. He also has worked as a tax preparer and accountant at his family's accounting firm.Those two jobs helped Kelly know the need to "pay attention to every detail," Kelly said.

 

Daytona attorney's $100,000 sports car stolen from driveway

DAYTONA BEACH — A local criminal defense attorney's sports car valued at more than $100,000 was stolen after the police said the thief found the keys inside the vehicle.The car, a 2014 Audi R8, was snatched from the riverfront residence of attorney Aaron Delgado early Friday morning, an incident report states.The car was found later that night in Manatee County in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven.

 

Police: Shooting suspect barricaded in home near B-CU

DAYTONA BEACH — Police have blocked off an area near Bethune-Cookman University where they say a suspect in weekend shooting has barricaded himself in a home.The house is located at 219 Adams St, and an armored vehicle and SWAT members are at the scene, according to Daytona Beach police.Authorities said the suspect reportedly shot an 18-year-old man after an argument at a beachside club about 4 a.m.

 

Volusia Mall's Cheddar's looking to hire 200

DAYTONA BEACH - The planned Cheddar's Casual Cafe restaurant at Volusia Mall is now hiring t<span style="font-size: 12px;">o fill the estimated 200 positions it is expected to have when it opens.When the 8,000-square-foot, free-standing restaurant, just east of Olive Garden, actually opens has yet to be announced.The Irving, Texas-based national restaurant chain has posted on its website that a Daytona Beach location is coming soon and that it is now accepting applications.The Daytona Beach location will be the chain's first in the Volusia-Flagler area.A temporary certific
