Something I did not anticipate when I started writing the Today in History briefs, which appear on the left side of this page, was hearing from people who were at those events.People like Lorraine Schatz.She was 6 years old when she saw a jet, an F-102 Delta Dagger, crash and explode south of Marineland in Flagler County.On July 19, 1965, Maj. Wayne Nordlie, Air National Guard, was flying in what was described as a routine training mission out of Jacksonville when he experienced engine problems and ejected. He bailed out over the ocean where a shrimp boat plucked him from the water.

Dolphin calf listed in guarded condition

MARINELAND — The female dolphin calf born at Marineland Dolphin Adventure on July 12 has developed a respiratory problem and is in guarded condition, according to a Tuesday media release from the attraction.The calf's ailment is being investigated with further diagnostic testing.

 

Student arrested in DSC campus bomb scare; Deltona Wal-Mart evacuated on similar threat

A bomb threat was called in Tuesday afternoon to the Deltona Wal-Mart a few hours after deputies arrested a Daytona State College student in a separate threat made to the school's Deltona campus last week, an official said.The Howland Boulevard store was evacuated following a phoned-in threat that was made shortly after 3 p.m.

 

Citi to refund $700M for deceptive card practices

Volusia Sheriff's Office to start Googling deputy applicants

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office will incorporate "routine Google-type Internet searches of all would-be deputies as part of the background investigative process" following the recent hiring, and subsequent firing, of a probationary deputy, an official said.Steven Korossy, a former Put-in-Bay, Ohio, police officer, was indicted by a grand jury in that state Wednesday on 14 counts of unauthorized use of the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway database, a fifth-degree felony, and one count of falsification, a misdemeanor, according to a news release from the Ohio Attorney General

 

Palm Coast officials ease cell tower restrictions, acknowledge weak signals

PALM COAST — Cell phone providers have told city officials they have some holes they need to fill around the city with more cell towers and antennas.They have explained to those officials there are too many areas where residents and motorists don't get adequate cell phone service, said Palm Coast City Manager Jim Landon."We know we have some dead spots," Landon told the City Council. He pointed specifically to the Palm Coast Parkway corridor between Interstate 95 and U.S.

 

Volusia, Flagler officials seek input on transportation plans

For nearly two years, the River-to-Sea Transportation Planning Organization has been envisioning how people will get around Volusia and Flagler counties in 2040.The 25-year long-range transportation plan is nearing completion and officials will present road, transit, trails and airport projects, plus an overview for the draft plan at three public hearings, where public comments and questions are welcome.Meetings are scheduled for:
4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bergengren Hall, Building 110, Room 112, Daytona State College, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.
5 to 7 p.m.
