New medical technique fixes Bend pastor's aortic rupture; Life-threatening motorcycle injuries bring multiple specialists togeth

On Aug. 31, Dan Dillard, pastor of the Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bend, was riding home on his motorcycle on Bear Creek Road when an oncoming car turned without seeing him. The Ford Mustang broadsided Dillard's Harley Davidson, which was traveling about 45 mph at the time.

 

OSU-Cascades proposes location; Site is located near intersection of Southwest Century and Chandler

Oregon State University-Cascades Campus has identified two adjacent sites it will bring to the state Board of Higher Education as the proposed location of the university's new campus.The properties total 56 acres and are located near the intersection of Southwest Century and Chandler avenues on Bend's west side. One of the sites is 10 acres of wooded land that borders the roundabout where Chandler and Southwest Century intersect.

Bend researchers are seeking physically active study participants

Researchers with the Oregon State University-Cascades Campus’ Functional Orthopedic Research Center for Excellence (FORCE) Lab in Bend are seeking participants for a study that examines lower extremity biomechanics following surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee.Participants must be physically active people. Participants can be men or women who have had ACL reconstruction in the last 10 years or control subjects who have not had surgery.

 

ACT registration window open

Registration is now open for the Oct. 26 administration of the ACT college readiness assessment. The registration deadline for students who intend to take the ACT assessment is Sept. 27.Students may register for the ACT online at www. actstudent. org or by mail.

 

Personal safety class offered

Awareness and personal protection classes are on the curriculum at the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.Situational awareness and the proper response are the topics when “Take Care ... Be Aware" class convenes at 5:30-8 p. m. Wednesday at the Sheriff’s Office, 63333 W. U. S. Highway 20, Bend. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m.

 

Dumpster fire put out in La Pine

Material in a dumpster spontaneously caught fire Tuesday evening after a construction company improperly disposed of painting and staining materials in La Pine., La Pine firefighters reported.According to the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District, firefighters responded to calls of a dumpster fire around 7:20 p.m. at Powder Village Condominiums. Area residents used portable fire extinguishers to control the fire until firefighters arrived.

Boardings dip at Redmond Airport

Passenger boardings at Redmond Airport declined about 1.4 percent last month over August 2012, according to airport statistics.Last month, 23,877 passengers flew out of Redmond Airport, a decrease of 333 from August 2012.For the first eight months of this year, boardings have declined about 2.3 percent over the same period last year, according to airport figures.

 

Startup Weekend begins Oct. 18

Bend will hold its third business-creating Startup Weekend next month, and this one dovetails with the 10th annual Bend Venture Conference.Startup Weekends allow budding entrepreneurs to pitch ideas and launch startup companies in 54 hours, starting on Fridays and finishing on Sundays.
