LA teachers, district to resume negotiations amid strike

LOS ANGELES — Teachers walked rainy picket lines Thursday at Los Angeles schools for a fourth day ahead of a new round of contract negotiations that a union leader said is unlikely to quickly end the walkout.
“After 21 months of negotiations I think it would be an unrealistic expectation to say that this is going to be over after today because there are hard issues to work through,” said Alex Caputo-Pearl, president of United Teachers Los Angeles.

 

Phoenix police: Dead newborn found in Amazon site’s restroom

PHOENIX — A newborn baby girl was found dead in a women’s restroom inside an Amazon distribution center and investigators have located and spoken with the mother, Phoenix police said Thursday.
Sgt. Vince Lewis said police were not commenting on whether the mother is an Amazon employee to prevent her identity from being revealed. No charges have been filed.
Firefighters confirmed that the baby was dead and that the investigation is continuing in consultation with the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office, a police statement said.

 

Trump says U.S. will develop space-based missile defense

WASHINGTON — Declaring that space is the new warfighting domain, President Donald Trump on Thursday vowed the U.S. will develop an unrivaled missile defense system to protect against advanced hypersonic and cruise missile threats from competitors and adversaries.
Trump said in a Pentagon speech that the U.S. will do what it takes “to ensure that we can detect and destroy any missile launched against the United States anywhere, any time, any place.”
