Mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus are in Las Vegas. Here’s why southern Utah officials aren’t too concerned.

The type of mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus recently were trapped in Las Vegas — 144 miles from southern Utah.
But Washington County officials aren’t too worried about the mosquitoes posing a threat anytime soon, said Sean Amodt, manager of the Southwest Mosquito Abatement District.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes thrive in urban environments, he said, attracted to spaces like storm drains and underground sewer lines.

 

Lyle Jeffs, fugitive polygamist, captured after almost a year on the run

Lyle Jeffs, who is among 11 members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints indicted in what prosecutors call a conspiracy to defraud the food stamp program, was captured late Tuesday in South Dakota.
Few details of the capture immediately provided. An online log at the Minnehaha County, S.D., jail lists Jeffs as an inmate.
The FBI Field Office in Salt Lake City sent a tweet Wednesday morning saying Jeffs was arrested in South Dakota about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Police look for elderly Roy man who has dementia

Roy police are looking for an 89-year-old man who has dementia after he hadn’t been seen since Wednesday morning.
Ivan Ward Courtney was last seen leaving his house and getting into his silver 1992 Toyota pickup truck, according to Roy police.
The truck has military and police stickers in the windows, police said.
Courtney is 5’8” with gray hair and blue eyes, according to police, and was last seen wearing a maroon plaid button-up shirt and jeans.

Muslim is stranded in Kenya on his way back to Utah

A Utah Muslim leader was stranded in Kenya on Wednesday night after he was barred from boarding a return flight to the United States.
Yussuf Awadir Abdi, imam of Salt Lake City’s Madina Masjid Mosque, traveled to Kenya to pick up his wife and five children. While his family was allowed on the plane back to Utah, Abdi was pulled aside by officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Man is burned severely in Yellowstone hot spring

A 21-year-old man suffered severe burns after falling into a Yellowstone hot spring on Tuesday night.
Gervais Dylan Gatete, from Raleigh, N.C., was in the Lower Geyser Basin area when he fell into the hot spring, according to a news release from Yellowstone National Park.
Gatete was with seven people when he fell, and they tried to drive him out of the park just before midnight, according to the release.

 

Request for transportation and transit reform ideas bring flood of proposals — including state takeover of UTA

A new state task force was deluged Wednesday with suggestions for what its co-chairman says may be “big major changes” coming for how transportation in Utah is governed and financed.
For example, Sen. Jake Anderegg, R-Lehi, offered several options to change oversight, including perhaps creating one state agency to govern both highways and transit.
