Transgender patient files malpractice suit against Utah physician who removed their ovaries

A Utah doctor known for her dedication to providing medical care to transgender people has been sued for malpractice after allegedly removing both of a trans patient’s ovaries during surgery when she only had consent to take one.
As a result, Dr. Rixt Luikenaar “breached her duty of care” to patient Lesley Ann Shaw in March 2015, according to the lawsuit filed July 21 in 3rd District Court.
Shaw, 37, was suffering from menstruation problems, including painful periods that lasted several weeks....

 

In many Utah jails, there’s no doctor in the house — and sometimes no nurse

When physician assistant Logan Clark got to the Duchesne County jail Dec. 1 for his once-a-week visit, the county’s nurse on staff told him he had a patient to see.
The 21-year-old inmate was Madison Jensen, who began suffering shortly after her arrest four days earlier. She was sick, fouling her cell with vomit and diarrhea, and had lost at least 17 pounds.

News reports say it offers 200 spacious new classrooms, more than 100 practice teaching rooms and 13 computer labs, along with high ceilings, giant windows, natural light and “ponder spaces” — pools of water, a terrace, outdoor tables and inviting lawns.

Salt Lake City police find toddler safe after car is stolen with him inside

Salt Lake City police continued to look for a stolen car Saturday night that they believed, at one point, had a 1-year-old boy inside. The boy was later found safe at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
The child was in good condition, authorities said. An investigation was ongoing.
The car, a gray 2005 Nissan Altima, was taken from the area of 800 South and 900 West at 8:51 p.m., police said. The boy was reported safe approximately 45 minutes later.

 

One person dead in Daggett County head-on crash

One person died and another was in critical condition Saturday when an RV slammed head-on into a Nissan on State Route 191 in Daggett County, authorities said.
The crash occurred before 6 p.m. about 25 miles north of Vernal, and resulted in a temporary closure of the highway, the Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Department of Transportation reported.

3-year-old girl dies a day after being struck by SUV in Eagle Mountain

A 3-year-old girl died Saturday evening, a day after being run over by an SUV steps away from her family’s Eagle Mountain home.
Charlie Nielson had been in critical condition at Primary Children’s Hospital since Friday night. She died after the family made the decision to remove life support, a Utah County Sheriff’s Office news release said.
Charlie was in a park across the street from her home early Friday night when her mother called out to her from a doorway, about 50 feet away.

 

Food court employee expected to survive after West Valley City mall stabbing

A food court employee was expected to survive after being stabbed multiple times at West Valley City’s Valley Fair Mall late Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The employee was handing out samples just before 5 p.m. when he was approached by a group of three men and stabbed seven or eight times in his side and back, West Valley police Sgt. Robert Brinton said.
The victim, estimated to be between 18 and 25 years old, was in critical but stable condition at a hospital Saturday evening.

Utah’s largest unions joined Saturday with political advocates in a march in downtown Salt Lake City in support of public education.

Utah congressional candidate Herrod apologizes for behavior over speeding ticket

A former state lawmaker who is running for a congressional seat has apologized for his behavior after he received a speeding ticket earlier this year, KSTU-TV reported.  Chris Herrod, who is running to represent Utah’s 3rd congressional district, was stopped on Feb. 9 for driving 79 in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 15, the station said.  In a police recording of the stop, Herrod tells the trooper: “I'm a former legislator that was honored.
