Utah forecast: Triple-digit temperatures head as hot, dry high pressure system moves in

Utah’s prolonged spell of thunderstorms and rain showers are over, at least for the week ahead.
You can credit the return of hot temperatures -- flirting with 100 degrees along the Wasatch Front and will into the triple digits in southern Utah -- to a high pressure system locking in over the Great Basin. The National Weather Service says this dry, northerly ridge will bake the region through Friday.
But in our desert state we can take comfort because it’s a “dry heat,” right? Hmm. It’s dry insid...

By 3-1 margin, Utahns favor independent commission to redraw political boundaries

Amid widespread allegations of past gerrymandering, Utahns, by a 61 percent to 22 percent margin, favor having an independent commission redraw political boundaries in once-a-decade redistricting.
That includes support by a plurality of Republicans — even though gerrymandering likely helped their candidates — and by big majorities of Democrats and unaffiliated voters, according to a new Salt Lake Tribune/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll.

How did Salt Lake City’s homeless district get so bad and why can’t we fix it?

The area around Pioneer Park and Rio Grande Street’s homeless shelter has long been a place to score illegal drugs. Crack cocaine, methamphetamine and alcohol were the substances of choice until about 2013 or ’14. Then heroin swept in and amped up everything.
It’s no longer a drug deal here and there. Now, drugs are passing hands nonstop, 24/7. It is not uncommon to see addicts shooting up in broad daylight.
